The Issue with Traditional Outreach

Traditional outreach is transactional - I want to do something, I know you can help me, so I want you to help me.

Content-based networking shines a spotlight on themI've been interviewing leaders in the field, you'd be a great addition!

To the company/person, exposure is the valuable part. Everyone and every company wouldn't mind more eyes and ears on their work. For you, the value is being looked at as an expert in the field, because you get the opportunity to interact with them.

You are giving them the gift by adding value, and they will want to pay it back.

Reciprocity

"Human beings are wired to return favours and pay back debts — to treat others as they've treated us."

How to Execute Content-Based Networking

  1. Goals

  2. People

  3. Content

Content

Content can be anything — podcasts, video series, blogs, Twitter threads, Medium etc. Say that you are creating this content for them.

Misc. Tips

  • Before you hit send, do command+F and type "I." Count how many I's there are, and start replacing them.

  • Record everything — you never know what you can do to repurpose the conversation and make it valuable for you.
