Michael L. Ross (World Politics, 2001)

Mar 1, 2022

Summary

Oil and mineral wealth both impede democracy, in and beyond the Middle East, according to Ross' statistical analysis, hurting poor countries more than rich countries. Ross also found some statistical support for the causal mechanisms of rentier (spending to lessen democratic pressure), repression (spending to increase state security and stifle unrest), and modernization (lack of job specialization) effects.
